The Self-Healing Stones of Intramuros

The walls that have defended the city of Manila for centuries are constructed from a very specific material: adobe. Unlike Mexican adobe, which consists of sun-dried mud bricks, Philippine adobe is volcanic tuff. Quarried primarily from Guadalupe in present-day Makati, this rock was forged from ash during ancient volcanic eruptions. It is light yet remarkably durable. And when paired with the right traditional materials, possesses a surprising quality: the ability to "heal" itself.



What makes Philippine adobe unique is its porosity. It isn't a solid, impervious block like granite. Instead, it is filled with microscopic air pockets. In a tropical climate with heavy rainfall, this porous texture allows the stone to behave almost like a rigid sponge.


Of course, building a fortress requires more than just stacking volcanic rock on top of each other. To hold these blocks together in the absence of modern cement, Spanish-era builders relied on a traditional mortar called argamasa. This mixture combined sand, crushed limestone, water, and an unexpected key ingredient: egg whites. The argamasa served as both structural mortar and protective plaster.


During the monsoon season, these stone buildings become drenched. Water is absorbed into the porous adobe, where prolonged exposure dissolves free lime from the argamasa mortar. The water then acts as a transport system, carrying the dissolved lime deep into the stone’s crevices, micro-cracks, and internal air pockets.


When the sun comes back out, the moisture evaporates. As the water leaves, it deposits the lime inside the gaps, where it reacts with carbon dioxide in the air and hardens in place. While modern material scientists work on developing high-tech self-healing concrete today, this exact mechanism was actively repairing the masonry of Manila four centuries ago!


Whether or not early builders fully understood the deep chemical reactions taking place, this biological and geological partnership created an extraordinarily resilient building technique. In a country continuously challenged by earthquakes and typhoons, it is one of the key reasons why historic structures across the archipelago—from Manila's fortifications to centuries-old parish churches—are still standing today.


So the next time you visit Intramuros, take a moment to look beyond the grand scale and inspect the minute details. Stop near the original surviving sections of Fort Santiago or the impressive facade of San Agustin Church, and take a closer look. You might be standing in front of living stones that have been healing themselves for centuries.
